Capital and largest city of Italy with its 2.7 million inhabitants, Rome is the third most visited tourist city destination in Europe. It is well known for its Roman emperors, notably Julius Caesar, and for the Vatican, home of the Pope, the head of the Catholic Church. The Vatican was founded as a sovereign state in 1929 and with a total area of just 4.4 square kilometres, it is the smallest state in the world. However, its power is far greater than its size suggests.
Attractions
Rome was the centre of the Roman empire, and the city has an entirely unique history. This is clearly seen across every neighbourhood on the seven hills of Rome. It is easy to come up with a list of 20 or 30 must-see places in Rome, but these four sights should definitely not be missed:
Colosseum: The city's impressive amphitheatre with was built in 80 CE and could hold more than 50,000 spectators. The theatre is most famous for gladiators fighting lions, but it has also been used for bull fights, and later as a hospital, and even a church.
Saint Peter's Basilica and Saint Peter's Square: The great church was built on the spot where Saint Peter the apostle is buried. He is entombed beneath the altar, which is 29 metres tall. Saint Peter's Basilica is the centre of the Roman Catholic Church, and it is among the largest in the world. It rises 135 metres, is 200 metres wide and the distance from the altar to the dome is 115 metres. Saint Peter's square surrounds the church and its curving colonnades are a symbol of the Church's embracing of the world around it. Of
Den Spanish Steps: The famous Spanish Steps staircase was built in 1725. The steps are one of the city's popular gathering points for Romans and tourists alike.
Circus Maximus: The largest stadium in history with room for almost 300,000 spectators. The arena was a horse racing track, and the stadium was in use from 550 BCE to 549 CE.
