Holiday in Athens
Athens is the capital of Greece and something entirely special. The city dates back longer than most since it has been inhabited for at least 3000 years. Athens was the leading city of ancient Greece in the first century BCE, and its cultural and democratic power laid the foundations of Western civilisation.

Attractions
On foot, you can easily manage some of the greatest sites and monuments of ancient culture. One moment, you walk through the chaotic smoggy streets of the big city, and the next you enjoy the fresh air of the Acropolis. Here, you can admire the area, the views and the amazing architecture of the Parthenon Temple. Right outside the Acropolis is the charming old neighbourhood of Pláka, which may however be crowded with tourists in peak season. Less overrun is the harbour town of Piraeus where catamarans and ferries link Athens to the Greek islands.

Restaurants and night life
In Athens, you should definitely treat yourself to some of the amazing local food on offer in the local tavernas and restaurants. Here, you will often get to listen to live music and maybe wash it down with an Ouzo. In Piraeus, fresh fish abounds at the many seafood restaurants, and fish is often more expensive than meat. Greek fast food ranges from American hamburgers to Greek souvlaki (skewered meat or fish ) and gyros (pita bread with meat sliced off a rotating spit).

Shopping
If you enjoy market bustle and folk life, you should head for the wide main street of Ermoú. Here, you'll also find international brands and shops selling anything from shoes to furs. North of the Ermoú in the Psiri area there are many second hand shops. The elegant and expensive fashion, jewellery and design shops are situated around the Sintagma and Kolonáki squares. Furthermore, there are several department stores in central Athens. But remember that most small shops and some smaller supermarkets close for siesta in the middle of the day.
